The portrait

One sector, several neighbourhoods

On rue Saint-Alexandre, the line between two Centris sectors follows the street: Ville-Marie (Centre-Ouest) on one side, Ville-Marie (Centre) on the other. On the Centre side, Les Wilson Lofts, Gillette Lofts and Les Lofts St-James sit among former office buildings and factories. A few blocks away, rue Sainte-Catherine turns up the volume.

Ville-Marie (Centre) is a sector of Centris's map, not an official neighbourhood of the City. East of rue Saint-Alexandre, it covers downtown, the Quartier des spectacles, the Quartier latin and the western part of Centre-Sud. We follow 18 loft buildings here.

History of downtown Montréal

Downtown slid west along rue Sainte-Catherine, where department stores replaced the bourgeois houses: Morgan, Birks, Ogilvy, Simpson, Eaton, all west of rue Saint-Alexandre. Garment workshops, printers and warehouses settled close by, rue Saint-Alexandre in particular, nicknamed Paper Hill.

In 1962, Place Ville Marie, built farther west over the Canadian National rail trench, launched the Underground City. It now runs about 32 km of tunnels.

What the past left in the walls

In our files, most buildings in the sector are classified as hard lofts. Gillette Lofts, on rue Saint-Alexandre, is a 1911 building constructed, according to our files, for the Gillette Safety Razor Company. On rue Sherbrooke Est, Mont St-Louis is a former college converted into condos. Newer, Le Peterson and Rythme, steps from Place des Arts, give the sector another face.

Living in Ville-Marie (Centre)

Many residents leave the car at home: according to our files, the Place-des-Arts, Saint-Laurent, Berri-UQAM and Square-Victoria–OACI metro stations are 2 to 10 minutes on foot from the buildings. At lunch, there is Café SAT, on boulevard Saint-Laurent. In the evening, you choose between a show at Place des Arts or the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde and a night at Foufounes Électriques, on rue Sainte-Catherine Est. For dinner, Cadet, on boulevard Saint-Laurent, is on the Michelin Guide 2026 Bib Gourmand selection. On Saturday, you climb at Café Bloc, on boulevard Saint-Laurent.

Every loft has a story. Here, it is written somewhere between a razor factory, a former college and a concert hall. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours. Olivier Mailloux, real estate broker, and Amélie Flanagan, real estate broker, work with buyers and sellers in Ville-Marie (Centre) and across Montréal.

Your broker for this neighbourhood

We know Ville-Marie (Centre).

We follow this neighbourhood’s buildings one by one: the soundproofing, what the condo fees really cover, and what has sold there. It’s been our specialty since 2010.

“Sometimes the best advice I can give you is to look somewhere else. You’ll know before you’ve even visited.”

Whether you’re torn between two areas, want to compare numbers, or just want to see inside a loft, we take the time it needs. No pressure.
