The portrait
Living in Old Montreal
It is 8 a.m. on rue Saint-Paul Ouest. Olive et Gourmando opens its doors, low light rakes across the grey limestone, and the cobblestones are still nearly empty. In Old Montreal, you wake up inside a setting that visitors only arrive to see later.
From Place Jacques-Cartier to Place d'Armes, everything is a walk. In 2026, Place Jacques-Cartier, rue Saint-Paul Est and rue Saint-Vincent are pedestrian-only from April 15 to October 29, and the forecourt of Notre-Dame Basilica is car-free year-round. Place-d'Armes metro is a short walk away. The museums, from Pointe-à-Callière to Château Ramezay, are a few streets away. At night, there are the tables of rue Saint-François-Xavier and the Old Port quays.
History of Old Montreal
Montréal began here, at Pointe-à-Callière, in 1642. The street layout drawn by the Sulpician Dollier de Casson can still be read on the map, and Pointe-à-Callière, an archaeology and history museum, stands on the founding site. In the 19th century, banks settled on rue Saint-Jacques, nicknamed the Wall Street of Montréal, and merchants replaced their shop-houses with warehouses.
Then the port moved on. The business centre drifted northwest, harbour activity shifted east, and the district emptied out when offices closed. Residential life returned later, in recycled buildings.
What the walls kept
The heritage site, declared a historic district in 1964, counts 557 buildings and remains. Grey limestone dominates, followed by red brick and cast iron. On rue Saint-Paul and rue de la Commune, former warehouses now hold boutiques, galleries, artists' studios and homes.
For a buyer, that is the raw material: a loft in Old Montreal often sits in a former warehouse or office building, with the structure and ceiling heights the original building dictated. No two floor plans are alike.
Every loft has a story. Here, it has been written in stone since the city's founding. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours. Olivier Mailloux, Real Estate Broker, and Amélie Flanagan, Real Estate Broker, work with clients in Old Montreal and across Montréal.
