The building’s story

Picture rue Saint-Alexandre in the late 1920s. Around Saint-James Church, reinforced concrete buildings rise one after another, with shops at street level and, upstairs, workshops and offices tied to fashion, textiles and fur. In 1928, one of them is completed: eleven storeys, drawn by architect Charles Alexander Mitchell. It is still standing.

Listed in the Quebec cultural heritage inventory as the Mayor Building, it took on a new life in 2002 as Les Lofts St-James, a condominium of roughly 120 units. The brick facade has not moved, and neither has the working-building spirit.

Inside, ceilings are about 10 feet in most units, and the eye runs straight across the open-plan space. Depending on the unit, you will find exposed concrete columns, hardwood floors, large windows, a gas fireplace. A few lofts are duplexes or have a mezzanine bedroom, and some come with a private rooftop terrace. According to our information, units range from 500 sq. ft. to 1,665 sq. ft. Picture a long worktable under those ceilings, in daylight.

Day to day, the building keeps things simple: elevators, a fitness room, a shared rooftop terrace and overnight security, with indoor parking depending on the unit.

Step outside and downtown is on foot. Saint-James Church and its forecourt are next door. Sainte-Catherine Street, McGill University, Place des Arts and the Quartier des spectacles are about a 15-minute walk or less, and Old Montreal is not far. Square-Victoria-OACI metro is about a 10-minute walk, Place-d'Armes and McGill stations about 12 minutes.

Les Lofts St-James speaks to people who want to live downtown in a former working building rather than a new tower: young professionals, creatives, first-loft buyers and pied-à-terre seekers.

Every loft has a story. The story of Les Lofts St-James starts in 1928, at the foot of Saint-James Church. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours. Olivier Mailloux and Amélie Flanagan, real estate brokers, follow the downtown loft market closely and work with buyers and sellers across Montreal.

Your broker for this building

We know Les Lofts St-James.

We follow this building one listing at a time: the corner units, the floors that catch the sun, what the co-ownership fees actually cover. That’s been our specialty since 2010.

“My job isn’t to sell you this building. It’s to tell you honestly whether it’s the right one for you, or whether we should look elsewhere.”

Whether you’re comparing two buildings, ready to make an offer, or just curious what a loft looks like inside, we take the time it takes. No pressure.
