The portrait
In summer, Sainte-Catherine Street East closes to traffic. Coloured balls hang above the patios for more than a kilometre, and as evening comes on the street fills with people.
History of the Village
Before it was the Village, this was a working-class faubourg nicknamed the "faubourg à m'lasse". Nobody is sure why. The Écomusée du fier monde favours the smell of molasses drifting from the port installations. To the east, the Molson brewery, which John Molson owned outright from 1786, long set the pace of the local economy.
The shop Priape opened on Sainte-Catherine Street East in 1974 and is still there. In the years that followed, bars for men moved in between Berri and Papineau, and the area came to be called the Village.
Industrial buildings turned lofts
The working-class faubourg left its factory buildings behind. In Espace Loft's records, four buildings in the area date from 1911 to 1952: Les Lofts Montreal Dairy, Les B-Lofts, Les Lofts Landmark and Les Lofts Reid. Our database classifies all of them as hard lofts.
They stand on Atateken Street, Panet Street and Papineau Avenue, in the heart of the area rather than at its edge.
Living in the Village
Life here is lived on foot. Beaudry metro opens onto Sainte-Catherine Street East under rainbow-coloured pillars, and Papineau station marks the eastern side. Coffee in the morning at Pourquoi Pas Expresso Bar on Atateken. Parc Raymond-Blain on Panet in the afternoon. Dinner at Othym, also on Atateken, or a play at Théâtre Prospero on Ontario Street East in the evening.
Each summer, Fierté Montréal fills Sainte-Catherine East and Atateken; in 2026 its 20th edition drew more than a million participants, according to the organization. Choosing the Village means choosing a lively neighbourhood, with the noise that comes with festival nights.
Every loft has a story. The Village's is written in its old factories and on Sainte-Catherine Street, closed to cars in summer. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours. Olivier Mailloux, real estate broker, and Amélie Flanagan, real estate broker, help buyers and sellers in the Village and across Montréal.
