The building’s story
Eighteen feet of ceiling height. On the top floor of the Mont-Saint-Louis, some lofts play with volumes you rarely expect in a condominium: exposed beams, mezzanines, large windows and, in one unit, ceilings rising up to twenty-four feet.
Generations of students passed through this place. The Collège Mont-Saint-Louis, run by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, was built in 1887-1888 to plans by Jean-Zéphirin Resther: a Second Empire building in grey Montreal stone, topped with a mansard roof and a dome. Émile Nelligan studied here, as did Jean-Paul Riopelle. The college closed in 1969.
After years of abandonment, the City of Montreal acquired the building in 1986. From 1987 to 1989, the Société municipale d'habitation converted it into 105 condominium apartments, to plans by architects Claude Gagnon and Guy R. Legault. The building was not emptied of its history: it still houses it.
Heights vary by unit: close to 18 feet in some top-floor duplex lofts, up to 24 feet in one unit of more than 2,000 square feet, with its exposed solid-wood framing. Several units have a mezzanine, while others rely on large windows with deep stone sills. According to our information, units range from 400 sq. ft. to 2,350 sq. ft.
In front of the building, a garden. Around it, Square Saint-Louis, Parc La Fontaine and the Plateau-Mont-Royal on one side, downtown on the other. The Sherbrooke, Saint-Laurent and Berri-UQAM metro stations are within a ten-minute walk, and UQAM, the CHUM, the Grande Bibliothèque and the Quartier des Spectacles are close by.
The Mont-Saint-Louis speaks to people who want a place with a story and generous volumes without leaving downtown: creatives, young professionals and lovers of heritage architecture.
Every loft has a story. The story of the Mont-Saint-Louis starts in 1888, in a grey-stone college on rue Sherbrooke Est. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours. Olivier Mailloux and Amélie Flanagan, real estate brokers, follow the downtown loft market closely and work with buyers and sellers across Montreal.

Your broker for this building
We know Mont st Louis.
We follow this building one listing at a time: the corner units, the floors that catch the sun, what the co-ownership fees actually cover. That’s been our specialty since 2010.
“My job isn’t to sell you this building. It’s to tell you honestly whether it’s the right one for you, or whether we should look elsewhere.”
Whether you’re comparing two buildings, ready to make an offer, or just curious what a loft looks like inside, we take the time it takes. No pressure.
