The portrait
History of Villeray
Saturday morning on rue Jarry. Bread coming out of the oven, an outdoor staircase in the sun, a back lane where neighbours stop to chat.
Before the streets, there was stone. Limestone quarries cut into Villeray for decades, and their rock built the Institut des Sourds-Muets, near boulevard Saint-Laurent. The village, home to 800 people, was annexed by Montreal in 1905. The electric streetcar had already brought the first working-class tenants. Villeray Park now sits on the site of a former quarry.
What history left in the walls
Between the wars, Villeray filled with brick duplexes and triplexes, with their outdoor staircases and back lanes. They still give the neighbourhood its face.
Around rue Molière, former textile factories became lofts: Le Spazio, Le Solstice and Le Sopra, with concrete ceilings from 9 to 17 feet. Farther north, on rue Saint-Dominique, the Dominion Preserving Co. plant, built in 1929, now holds 13 lofts with 11 to 12 foot ceilings and a south-facing inner courtyard.
Living in Villeray
Villeray is lived on foot and in community. Jarry or De Castelnau metro, then Jean-Talon Market nearby for the Saturday shop. In the evening, the choice is Les Mômes, Casavant or Osteria Berto, or a glass at Polari or Lundis au soleil.
What stands out is the community. As in La Petite-Patrie, neighbours, shopkeepers and families cross paths in the same green alleys, on the same terraces, at the same counters. That street life is what makes Villeray so popular.
Jarry Park is the neighbourhood's big backyard. Every summer, the National Bank Open brings a professional tennis tournament to IGA Stadium, with players of world calibre. To leave the city, the Métropolitaine and Autoroute 15 are quick to reach, and the Marché Central also sits on the edge of the neighbourhood.
Every property has a story. In Villeray, it often starts with an outdoor staircase, a green alley and a neighbour who knows your first name. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours.
