The portrait
History of Parc-Extension
At the end of avenue du Parc, where the rails cut through the neighbourhood, a commuter train pulls in beside the metro. The name tells that story: it comes from an early 20th-century development, "Park Avenue Extension", which extended avenue du Parc.
Annexed by Montreal in 1910, the neighbourhood started modestly, with unpaved streets and little transit. It went on to draw families from everywhere: French Canadians, Armenians, Jews, Italians, then thousands of Greeks, who made it their community heart.
What history left in the walls
The railway drew the map. Jean-Talon station, built by the Canadian Pacific in 1931, gave its address to Parc metro, which now occupies the old building on rue Hutchison. Around the tracks, textiles, food and the railway employed generations of workers.
On the streets, most of the housing dates from the postwar years. On rue Hutchison, former industrial buildings became Les Condos de la Gare: concrete ceilings of 9 to 10 feet, big windows, rooftop terraces.
Living in Parc-Extension
Parc-Ex is lived in many voices. In 2021, more than 40% of residents were immigrants, mostly from Greece, India and Pakistan, and French, English, Punjabi and Greek are heard on the same streets. The green alleys, the library and the maison de la culture on rue Saint-Roch are the meeting places.
