The building’s story

There was a time when, in the heart of Griffintown, chocolate was made. On rue William, the Walter M. Lowney Company of Canada produced its chocolates and candies in a large brick factory, connected to its neighbour on rue de l'Inspecteur. Both buildings are still standing. Today they are known as the Lowney.

The older one dates from 1901: a textile factory designed by architects Finley & Spence for Gault Brothers, which Lowney occupied from 1909. The second, Lowney's main factory on rue William, was completed in 1905. In 2004, Prével launched the Lowney project here, one of the first residential projects to bring the neighbourhood back to life, on plans by Cardinal Hardy. Both factories became lofts: Lowney 1 in 2005, Lowney 2 in 2006. The later phases of the project are new construction.

In both buildings, the industrial structure has not moved. You can see it on the ceiling. Lowney 1, at 350 rue de l'Inspecteur, has 64 lofts on five floors, with its timber frame, columns and wide pine floorboards. Lowney 2, at 1015 rue William, has 69 lofts on five floors, with brick often left exposed and factory windows of up to 8 feet. Picture your eye rising to the original beams, at 9 feet on some floors and up to 13 feet in some units. According to our information, units range from 451 to 982 sq ft. On the ground floor, some units open onto a private terrace.

A footbridge still links the two buildings. Up top, an outdoor pool and terraces with barbecues, downtown as a backdrop, and an urban chalet. Indoor parking completes the picture.

Down below, Griffintown. The Lachine Canal bike path is a few streets away, Old Montreal and downtown are within walking distance, and the École de technologie supérieure is next door. Square-Victoria–OACI station is a 9-minute walk, Bonaventure 10 minutes.

Les Lowney speak to people who want a real loft of wood and brick steps from downtown, for a first purchase or for the long haul.

Every loft has a story. The story of the Lowney begins in a Griffintown chocolate factory. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours. Olivier Mailloux and Amélie Flanagan, real estate brokers, follow the Griffintown loft market closely and work with buyers and sellers across Montreal.

Your broker for this building

We know Les Lowney.

We follow this building one listing at a time: the corner units, the floors that catch the sun, what the co-ownership fees actually cover. That’s been our specialty since 2010.

“My job isn’t to sell you this building. It’s to tell you honestly whether it’s the right one for you, or whether we should look elsewhere.”

Whether you’re comparing two buildings, ready to make an offer, or just curious what a loft looks like inside, we take the time it takes. No pressure.
