Le Redpath – Phase J

Twelve feet of ceiling, and the brick of the Redpath refinery just across the courtyard. At 1649 rue St-Patrick, Phase J is the Redpath's new building: built in the mid-2000s on the site of the refinery John Redpath opened in 1854 on the Lachine Canal.

The refinery closed in 1979. In the early 2000s, developer Gueymard turned the site into condominiums, phase by phase, on plans by Groupe Cardinal Hardy. The old buildings were renovated. Phase J was built new, and its declaration of co-ownership was signed in 2006. It does not imitate the factory: it stands across from it, as a neighbour.

Inside, you find what you look for in a loft. Ceilings of 11 to 12 feet depending on the unit, French doors reaching up to 10 feet, open spaces where living room, dining room and kitchen are one room. In several units the bedroom sits on a raised platform, half open, and a gas fireplace warms the living area in winter. The 20 lofts range from 702 sq ft to 1,547 sq ft. Depending on the unit, balconies look out over the canal or the city.

On the ground floor, four commercial spaces open onto rue St-Patrick. Above, three floors of lofts. And around it, the life of the whole Redpath: the outdoor pool, the gym, the inner courtyard, on-site security and the indoor garage.

Outside is Pointe-Saint-Charles. The Lachine Canal bike path runs along the site, the Bassin des Prêtres is steps away, and Atwater Market is just across the water for Saturday shopping. Charlevoix metro is a 17-minute walk.
