Le Nordelec Phase 2

Glass from floor to ceiling. Behind it, the brick of the former Northern Electric plant and, right across the street, the Lachine Canal. Phase 2 of Le Nordelec is the contemporary tower of a complex that once turned out cables and wire.

The Northern Electric complex grew in stages between 1913 and 1948 until it filled an entire block of Pointe-Saint-Charles. At 1740 rue Saint-Patrick, a new wing joined it: a concrete and steel tower built in 2014 and registered as a condominium in 2015, with 135 units. It shares Le Nordelec's common spaces with Phase 1, set inside the old factory.

Inside, the concrete stays exposed overhead, at 9 or 10 feet depending on the unit. Windows run right down to the floor, and in the corner units the view opens toward the canal, the mountain or downtown, depending on orientation. At the top, two-level penthouses open the primary bedroom onto a private terrace. Units range from 474 sq ft to 1,406 sq ft.

Up on the roof, a heated pool, a gas fireplace and barbecues are ready for summer evenings. The urban chalet, with its pool table and screening room, and the gym round things out. On the complex's ground floor, cafés and neighbourhood services are a few steps from the elevator.

Outside is Pointe-Saint-Charles. The Lachine Canal bike path runs right across the street, Atwater Market sits on the other side of the water, and rue Centre keeps its neighbourhood shops. Charlevoix metro station is a 16-minute walk.
