The building’s story
In 1896, the Hospice Auclair opened its doors at the corner of Rachel and Henri-Julien streets. For decades, it took in orphans and elderly people. The grey Montreal stone is still there, facing the bell towers of Saint-Jean-Baptiste church.
Built from 1894 to 1896 to plans by architect Casimir Saint-Jean, the former hospice sat empty for nearly twenty years before Développements Rachel Julien acquired it in 1996. The conversion added a storey over part of the building and an underground garage, and the condominium was created in 1997. According to the developer, the project won the APCHQ Domus award and two ACQ awards in 1997. The building lies within the Église-de-Saint-Jean-Baptiste heritage site.
Picture former hospice halls turned into lofts: original brick walls, wood floors, 10-foot ceilings in most units and up to 16 feet in some penthouses. The four penthouses stretch over two levels with a mezzanine and a private rooftop terrace, and a few units have a sunroom. Based on our information, there are 62 units ranging from 497 sq. ft. to 1,680 sq. ft.
On the roof, a shared terrace looks out over Mount Royal and downtown. The building has two elevators, a 30-space indoor garage with charging stations, storage lockers, bike storage, central air conditioning and a concierge service.
The Rachel Street bike path runs right past the door. Rue Saint-Denis is 2 minutes away, La Fontaine Park and Mont-Royal metro are a 9-minute walk, and Square Saint-Louis about twelve minutes.
Le Rachel-Julien speaks to people who want to live in a piece of Plateau history, with the comfort of a well-run building day to day.
Every loft has a story. The story of Le Rachel-Julien begins in 1896, in a grey stone hospice. Our job is to help you find the one that becomes yours. Olivier Mailloux and Amélie Flanagan, real estate brokers, follow the Plateau Mont-Royal loft market closely and work with buyers and sellers across Montreal.

Your broker for this building
We know Le Rachel-Julien.
We follow this building one listing at a time: the corner units, the floors that catch the sun, what the co-ownership fees actually cover. That’s been our specialty since 2010.
“My job isn’t to sell you this building. It’s to tell you honestly whether it’s the right one for you, or whether we should look elsewhere.”
Whether you’re comparing two buildings, ready to make an offer, or just curious what a loft looks like inside, we take the time it takes. No pressure.
